Puglia, also called "the wine cellar of Italy", lies all in the south by the Adriatic Sea, its capital being Bari. The region, which is very hot in summer, is the oldest wine-growing region of Italy and disposes of the most grape varieties. For more than 3000 years primarily red wines have been produced on more than 120,000 hectares.
Only five percent of the production are high-quality DOC (G) plants, which are often grown on very small vineyard areas. Limestone, clay and sandstone are the predominant soil conditions. Additional irrigation is often necessary. With the huge number of red, white and rosé varieties, local winery owners during the last years have been attaching increasing importance to autochthonous grape varieties.
Special top-quality wines are coming from the still existing winegrowers' cooperatives: Accademia dei Racemi, Masseria Monaci as well as wines by Severino Garofano, Rivera and L'Antesi.
