Italy can pride itself rightly as being one of the oldest and most multi-faceted wine countries of the world, growing more than 2000 grape varieties.
The climate all over Italy is characterised by the protective effect of the Alps in the north, the Apennines as a meteorological divide stretching from the north to the south, and the situation between Adriatic and Tyrrhenian Sea. Thus wine can be cultivated on a large number of different types of grounds.
Per year approx. 53 million hectolitres are produced on nearly 900,000 hectares of vineyard area, Italy thus taking one of the top ranks worldwide, beside France and Spain.
Above all red wines with high ageing potential are famous as the "grand wines of Italy", particularly the Barolo and the Barbaresco made from the Nebbiolo grape - the noblest kind in Italy.
The white wines as a rule are developed on to yield a dry product; the various Spumante, headed by the Prosecco are also world-famous.
