Nearly 2,000 hours of sunshine per year make the Palatinate with more than 23,000 hectares the highest-yielding German wine region. A scenery with vines stretching over the hills as far as the eye can reach, producing splendid wines. Hardly surprising that the Palatinate produces more than 70 percent of the German wines.
Apart from the well-known Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, pinot blanc and gris are growing there; in recent years there has also been a strong increase in red varieties, headed by Dornfelder and Pinot Noir.
Among the leading vineyards are Reichsrat von Buhl and Müller Catoir as well as the "newcomers" Philipp Kuhn and Karl Wegner.
